Chapter 18 If She Comes Up, It's Baptism

After reading this chapter, tell me your thoughts on the drowning of Ophelia. What did it mean? why did Shakespeare have her drown? What was the symbolic significance?

Drowning makes me think of a complete change. You go from dry to completely wet. I think the drowning of Ophelia somewhat represented the change that occured soon before. I think her going crazy was a complete change similar to that of drowning. honestle, I think her drowning was probably better than the life she would ahev led going on being crazy like she had become.

i think ophelias drowning was symbolic in a way that it meant that hamlet had to lose something that meant so much to him before he could undergo a change himself. i think once ophelia drowned he realized that he needed to do something to make everything better again, whether that meant him acting crazily or not.

I think Shakespeare's purpose for having Ophelia drown was partially because her character was involved in all of the mess that went on in Hamlet, all of which wasn't solved until everyone involved was dead. But i also think he had her drown to symbolize her change from sweet and innocent into polluted and crazy, as a result of Hamlet toying with her emotions and her father's death.

i think that ophelia drowning was forshadowing that a sudden change was going to occure like when hamlet and leartes fought. i think he had her drown because he wandted to show that she wasnt sure about what was going on and thats why they said she was singing while she drowned.

I think Shakespeare made Ophelia drown, because he was showing that no person is invincible. He chose her, because she really wasn't affected to much by the situation, until the death of her father. I think he also included it, to make the point that Hamlet sacrificed too much when trying to get revenge.

i think shakespere had ophelia drown was because she was tanted with so much around her lies, trechery false hopes of love from hamlet her father being killed by the man she loved so just like we sinner's who bealive in baptism we wash our sins off she washed all the negative around her by drowning

I think Shakespeare had Ophelia drown because she was really the last remaining symbol of innocence in Denmark. Everyone was trying to use her for their own selfish purposes, including Hamlet, and her only way to escape from that was to die. As far as the significance of the drowning itself, drowning is a submersion, the victim is completely overtaken by the water. It is almost a form of surrender. The innocence and promise (Hamlet's chance at a happy life) Ophelia stood for was swept away with the current because she was not a part of Denmark's corruption. She did not deserve to suffer the fate of the other characters who had to be purged to make way for a new reign in Denmark.

I think Shakespeare had Ophelia drown because Hamlet really loved her and like it said in that question we answered in class, in a tradgedy bad stuff has to happen to the main character. Shakespere wanted us to know Hamlet wasn't really crazy because when Ophelia dies his reaction is real.

Shakespeare hyad to get rid of someone at that point. I think he may have meant for that to cause either hamlet or laertes to get extremely jacked and cause something extreme to hapen (e.g. the duel)

I think Shakespeare had Opelia drown because he wanted to get Hamlet back on track to avenge his father. He thought if somethihng else tragic happend to Hamlet that he would start thinking of ways to make things better and avenging his father would do that. Yes, it was a very tragic thing but it got the play back on track.

I think he had her drown becasue for one she was apart of the corruption going on at the time and everyone involved had to die for things to move on. I also think he had her drown to make Laertes even more mad and upset so he could have the motivation to do what needed to be done.

I think Shakespear made Ophelia drown because she had already gone insane from her father dying. So that Hamlet would feel the hurt when you loose someone dear to you. And that he would do something about that hurt, in which he did.
